Citation:
 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. After the capture of an enemy post he set about the work of consolidation with great skill, though considerably harassed by snipers. He crawled forward to reconnoitre and located three, whom he killed. He returned to the post but the consolidation was much interfered with by the enemy with rifle grenades and trench mortars. He then crept out some distance to a flank, and, showing himself, and ostentatiously digging and throwing up earth, induced the enemy to think the consolidation was proceeding in his locality. His ruse de guerre was very successful, and he drew the enemy fire off the post and enabled the real work of consolidation to be completed. He set a brilliant example of gallantry and alert initiative. 

Walter Rushton was from Stoke-on-Trent. Originally served with the Liverpool Regiment before transferring to the Lancashire Fusiliers.
