An early 1938 award AFM medal group of four awarded to 561877 Flight Lieutenant Thomas Pountney, 48 (Gr) Squadron, Royal Air Force.

WW2 Defence Medal unnamed as issued
War Medal 1939-45 unnamed as issued
The medals are in good condition and are swing mounted for wear. Comes with box of issue for the AFM, two sports medals awarded to Pountney in 1939 and cloth 5 F.T.S badge.
London Gazette:
AFM - 9th March 1938
The recommendation reads:
' This airman has shown extreme devotion to duty since he was posted to this unit. He has completed 503 hours flying during that time, 302 of which were flown during last year.
During this period he has faced several difficult situations with the utmost coolness and his efforts as an all weather pilot are a fine example.'
Covering remarks:
'Sergeant POUNTNEY has performed most valuable service in the development of navigational flying in bad weather. I recommend the award of the Air Force Medal as a fitting recognition of his work as a pilot.'
Pountney was born in 1911 and enlisted 30th August 1927. He was an instructor who trained pilots throughout the war. Commissioned in 1940 as Pilot Officer, being promoted to Flying Officer in May 1941 and to Flight Lieutenant in May 1942. He retired in 1950.
