During the first world war Morgan served on HMS Essex, Vivid II, Orion and Idaho (PC 69). He served on Idaho from 14th May 1918 to 18th December 1918. She was a steam yacht of 43 tons requisitioned in 1915 and used as a Patrol Craft. It was whilst Morgan was serving here that he was awarded the RHS bronze medal.
Rescue at Milford Haven (RHS Case #44601)
At 11am on 8th October 1918, Stoker Petty Officer Samuel R. Morgan and AB Jesse Brammer were in a whaler in Milford Haven, with a fresh breeze blowing, when the wind capsized the boat throwing both men into the water. Morgan with difficulty kept Brammer afloat until they could be picked up. Case sent to RHS by the Admiralty who granted Morgan their bronze medal for saving life.
After the war Morgan served on HMS Indus, Vivid II and Hawkins before being loaned to the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1924, where he served onboard Laburnum, Diomede and Dunedin.
The group needs further researching into his second world war service.
The WW1 and RNLS&GC medals are worn with contact marks and polishing. Please see photos.
