London Gazette: 19th February 1917 (MM)

When war broke out Brown was serving with the Mounted Police at Reedley. He went out to France with the 2nd Division in August 1914 with the 11th Division, 60th Brigade, R.F.A. During the first battle of Ypres he was wounded in the leg whilst assisting a wounded officer, carrying him to safety. He was brought home and spent 4 months recovering in hospital. After making a recovery, he was sent to Egypt in January 1915 and six months later was again sent to France. He was badly gassed and spent another six months in hospital in France. He again returned to the front and participated in the fighting around Arras and Messines. In July 1917, he was once again severely gassed - from which he suffered the effects for the rest of his life, as well as being badly wounded in the thigh on the Ypres front. He returned home spending time in hospital before returning to active service on 22/10/1918.

In recognition of his courageous conduct during the first battle of Ypres, the men of his battery present him a silver cigarette case and silver match box which were inscribed with details of his effort to rescue the wounded officer.

He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery with the official record stating "whilst serving in the 60th Brigade, R.F.A., 11th Division, extinguished a fire in the ammunition dump." the circumstances were that on the 18th November 1916, at Courcette, an "enemy shell hit the ammunition dump, and the rounds caught fire. Bomb, Brown threw the buring rounds into a hole full of water."

The medals are in good condition with ribbons.
