Sidney Harry Brain was captured and taken prisoner of war by the Japanese in February 1942 when serving with the 89 Bty, 35 LAA Regt Royal Artillery.
He was among the prisoners being transported on Japanese "Hell Ship" SS Tamahoko Maru, when it set sail on 20th June 1944 with 772 allied prisoners of war, as well as some 500 Japanese soldiers on board, from Takao for Moji. Four days later at 11.50pm, in the Koshiki Straits, 40 miles SW of Nagasaki, the Tamahoko Maru was torpedoed by USS Tang and sank in less than 2 minutes.
An escort picked up the Japanese survivors and left the prisoners of war in the water, to be picked up the next morning by a small whaling ship., which brought 212 survivors to Nagasaki. The other 560 prisoners of war, including Gunner Sidney Harry Brain were lost.
The group comes with original box of issue, condolence slip, letters from the war office and notification of death.
