An Indian Mutiny Medal awarded to Assistant Surgeon William Ashton, 53rd Regiment of Foot. 

Indian Mutiny Medal named to Asst. Srgn. Wm. Ashton, M.B. 53rd Regt. 

William Ashton was born on 6th April 1835 in Doneraile, Limerick. 

He became an Assistant Surgeon in September 1857. He served in the Indian Mutiny initially with the 79th Highlanders (1857) and then with the 53rd Foot (1858-60). Present in the attack on fortress of Rampyur Kussiah and in passage of the Gogra at Fyzabad and was with the 53rd in action at Tulsipore. 

Ashton was appointed Staff Surgeon, 25th September 1860. Served with the Royal artillery from October 1864. 

Appointed Surgeon Major, Army Medical Department, 27th March 1872 and then Brigade Surgeon, 5th October 1882. He retired, 29th December 1888.
