A post war 'Northern Ireland' BEM group of four awarded to 23732587 Corporal William Peter John 'Pete' Lord, 1st Battalion Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding), whose military career was cut short after being hit by a brick on the Falls Road, West Belfast.

B.E.M. (Military) - London Gazette, 20th March 1978:
‘In recognition of Meritorious Service in Northern Ireland during the period 1st August 1977 to 31st October 1977.’
William Peter John Lord was born in 1942 and baptised at Ramsey on the Isle of Man. Married at Halifax in 1963.He joined up in 1957 and during 22 years service with the Duke of Wellington's Regt, would find himself a part of the British Army of the Rhine, and with the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Cyprus. However it was in numerous tours of Northern Ireland during the troubles, including a difficult 18 month posting where the battalion was stationed at Ballykelly Camp in Londonderry and suffered 2 killed and 15 wounded in a total of 363 attacks on the unit, that he would come to the fore. Lord would be present on the tour of July to October 1977 that included Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's visit to the province. It is possible that it was in connection with this event that he earned the British Empire Medal, however it was during this tour that the Derry Republicans thought it a prime opportunity to stage a riot and initiate a second Bloody Sunday, but the Duke’s staying disciplined let the Republicans entertain themselves.
Lord's award was published in the London Gazette of 21st March 1978, which gazette covers awards earned in Northern Ireland in the period from 1st August to 31st October 1977. Lord would later be present in Northern Ireland during the period from October 1979 to February 1980, when his battalion suffered several casualties from the IRA group known as the ‘Ballymurphy Gun Team’, who were attempting to ambush British Security Forces by shooting at them through closed windows. During this tour, Lord suffered a wound, leading to the loss of his eye from a missile, which would cause him to be medically discharged.
The medals are in good condition and are mounted court style for display.
