'Humane Heroes.
The bronze medals of the Society were presented to Hedley Wall and Bert Ellis at the Town Hall, Blackpool for saving a dog from the sea at the risk of their own lives. A terrier jumped on to the sea wall near the Boating Pool, overbalanced, and fell into the water. Wall went down some steps and walked along a ledge on the sea wall. In trying to grasp the dog he was washed off his feet and was in difficulties when his colleague, Ellis, was lowered over the wall in a basket attached to a rope. By this time Wall was exhausted, but with the assistance of Ellis they secured the dog, which was hauled up to safety.
Mr. F.T. Pennington, the Chairman of the branch, presided at the presentation, which was made by the Mayoress, Mrs. L. Newsome. Supporting Mr. Pennington were Mrs. W.G. Bean, president, Mrs. W.J. Sweeney, honourary secretary of the Blackpool branch of the R.S.P.C.A., and Inspector Jones. The Mayoress, in presenting the medals, said that during he year of office nothing had given her greater pleasure than to meet men like themselves, who had so much love in their hearts as to risk their own lives to save a little dog.'
