Recommendation for Military Medal:
London Gazette: 11th October 1945
Gunner WATKINS is an OP signaller who has consistently given excellent service during the period February to April 1945 during which time his Regiment was deployed on the R MAAS front. This has involved a continuous and tedious vigil with occasional sharp actions, and more than once he has accompanied his Troop Commander making up the FOO party for the support of raids across the river.
On 23 April 1945 he took part in one such raid in support of RoyalMarine Battalion. Soon after crossing he was wounded and blown some yards by a mine which detonated close by. Unperturbed by this he immediatelyopened up communications on his No.18 wireless set, and under adverse conditions and in spite of very little sleep maintained perfect communications for a period of 48 hours while the raid progressed. In closing stages, when hard pressed by the enemy, he succeeded in passing the orders for a smoke screen, under cover of which the infantry withdrew.
Gunner WATKINS has been an OP signaller in other Theatres and his coolness, courage and devotion to duty under fire have always been an outstanding example to those around him. He has been constantly in action since 'D' day and his qualities and tenacity of purpose have been a valuable contribution to the success of several operations.

An amazing group to a man who served in Africa and Italy. He returned to the UK for D Day and was continually in action from D Day.

On the mission for which he was awarded his MM he accompanied the Royal Marines across the River Maas to set up an observation post. He was wounded after being blown by a mine close by, yet continued to operate for the next 48 hours while the raid progressed.

The medals are in good condition and are court mounted for wear.

Comes with copy of hus recommendation and LG entry.
