A first world war POW medal pair with original documents awarded to 683736 Private Abraham Samuels, 22nd London Regiment, a Jewish soldier who was captured during the Spring Offensive 28th April 1918.

The medals are in good condition.
Abraham Samuels served as a Private in the 22nd London Regiment (4th August 1917 to 21st August 1917) and later in the 4th London Regiment (22nd August 1917 to 25th April 1918).
He was one of several brothers who served in the Great War. He, himself, was taken prisoner and one of his brothers was killed in action. The family was from the East End of London and he was a tailor, in Burdett Road, Limehouse, London E14. He is confirmed in the British Book of Jewry 1914-1918.
The group comes with several original documents including a moving letter and the canvas pouch in which this lot has been stored for many years.
- A poignant and moving letter dated 24th August 1916 from Louis to his brother Abraham, on YMCA On Active Service headed paper from Honfleur, France. In this letter he exhorts his brother to not worry about him and to remember to send the “fags” and some grubb. Within three weeks Louis was dead, killed 15th September 1916. and he is buried at Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France. The hand-written letter is possibly the last letter sent home. R/20985 Rifleman Louis Samuels, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, died 15th September 1916 and is buried at Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France.
- The Kriegsgefangenensendung form of Abraham confirming his capture dated 28th April 1918.
- His Soldier’s Pay Book.
- Army Form B. 104-83B which is the notice sent to Abraham that his brother, Louis was reported missing, sent 13th December 1916.
- A second Army Form B104-80B which confirms the repatriation of 295387 A. Samuels 26th November 1918 having been held Prisoner of War.
- A small 1931 diary, a small pamphlet entitled Hebrew at a Glance along with several other pieces of ephemera.
