A pair of 1902 and 1911 Metropolitan Police Coronation Medals, awarded to PC William George Hacker, an ex-Royal Marine who served in the Egypt/Sudan campaign on HMS Racer,  earning the Egypt Medal with Gemaizah 1888 clasp, before joining the Metropolitan Police and serving with Thames Division on the River. He later died while serving with the Met Police in 1918.

Hacker is also entitled to an Egypt Medal with clasp Gemaizah 1888 and Khedives Star. Only 182 Gemaizah clasps were awarded to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

This missing 1882-89 Egypt Medal to William Hacker was sold at auction by Noonans (Formerly DNW) in London on 16 September 2010.

William George Hacker was born in Chislehurst in Kent on 22 April 1870, the son of Adelaide and George Hacker, a Mason. In the 1871 Census he is listed aged 11 months but now living in South Marsh, Lambeth with his parents. In the 1881 Census he is listed aged 11 and is still living in Lambeth with his parents.

William attested for service with the Royal Marines for a 12 year engagement on 4 October 1886 with Chatham Division, service number 4324, although he lied about his date of birth adding on two years, which is given as 4 May 1868. His full service records are available for download at the National Archives. In 1888 he served in the Egypt Sudan campaign while on HMS Racer, being awarded the Egypt and Sudan Medal with the Gemaizah 1888 Clasp, and is confirmed on the HMS Racer roll as Private, Royal Marine.

In the 1891 Census he is listed as living in the Royal Marine barracks in Rochester near Chatham in Kent.

Following his discharge from the Royal Marines on 4 October 1898, William then attested for service and took his medical with the Metropolitan Police on 3 January 1899, before he was then warranted (Number 84863) as a Police Constable on 13 April 1899 serving with Thames Division on the river, one of the smallest divisions of the Metropolitan Police.

The 1901 Census lists him as a Police Constable aged 30 and living with his wife Bessie and daughter Adelaide etc in Kennington Road, Southwark. The 1911 Census Lists him as a Metropolitan Police Constable, living in Walcott Square, Kennington with his wife Bessie etc.

Willian served his entire career with Thames Division on the River, he is noted as dying on 4 March 1918 while he was still serving with the Met Police.
