A Naval GSM with Palestine 1945-48 clasp awarded to D/JX709285 Able Seaman Walter John Staerck, Royal Navy, who was killed when H.M.S. Saumarez was mined in the Corfu Channel off the Albanian coast on 22nd October 1946 and is remembered at Plymouth Naval Memorial.

Killed In Action - 22nd October 1946
Walter John Staerck was killed in action during the Corfu Channel Incident when H.M.S. Saumarez struck an Albanian mine in the Corfu Channel on 22nd October 1946. 26 of the crew of the Saumarez were killed in the explosion, including Staerck. The Channel was supposed to be mine free, and contemporary evidence suggests that the mines had been deliberately laid by the Albanians.
The medals is in good condition.
