Matthew Delaney was born on 25th May 1900 in Weymouth, Dorset. He joined the Royal Navy as a boy in 1916 and signed up for 12 years service on his 18th birthday. Awarded his LS&GC on 18th July 1933.
Delaney was onboard SS City of Bedford, a British cargo steamship, which was en route to Liverpool from Halifax, Nova Scotia in Convoy HX 97, when it was sunk after a collision with "Bodnant" on 30th December 1940. Delaney was one of 48 crew members that lost their lives.
