A scarce first world war memorial plaque to Second Lieutenant Claude Neville Madeley, 43rd Squadron, Royal Flying Corps.
WW1 Memorial Plaque named to Claude Neville Madeley
Killed In Action - 19th January 1918 (Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arieux-En-Gohelle)
Madeley was born in Worcester in 1894 and was educated at Wimbledon College.
When war broke out he enlisted in the Royal Engineers and was at the landings at Sulva Bay, Gallipoli. He served as a despatch rider in France until receiving a commission in the Royal Fling Corps in May 1917. He returned to the front as a qualified pilot in December 1917.
He was killed in action in aerial combat whilst flying Sopwith Camel B6208 (shot down by Ltn. Koch of Jasta 12).
The plaque is in good condition.
