A South Atlantic (Falklands War) medal with rosette awarded to PO40116F Marine G.J. Barnard, a member of 45 Commando Royal Marines who took part in the battle for Port Stanley having previously “yomped” across East Falkland. 45 Commando launched a night attack on Two Sisters in which 8 Royal Marines died and 15 were wounded.

The medal is in good condition.
The service number indicates a 1979 enlistment, and shown on the roll as serving with 45 Commando. Marine Barnard left the Corps in July 1983 and did not serve in Northern Ireland.
At the time of the Falklands conflict, Barnard was a Marine Officers Attendant (MOA) in the Headquarters Company. The MOA was an unpopular post but the job was rotated and shared between marines in the unit. In the field the MOA would be busy with housekeeping tasks for the Officer including preparing meals, digging in, responsible for taking messages, and escorting an officer when moving about the location on his own or guiding people around the position. The MOA wouldn't be far away from the Company Commander during an assault.
