The medals come with a lot of copy research, prison and census records. There is still a lot more that can be done on this colourful family history.

Richard Varley Hindle was in and out of prison for multiple offenses including poor rates, civil debt, assault on wife and failure to pay for his son’s upkeep. There are many newspaper stories about his poor behaviour and misdemeanours. James, his son, was sent to a reformatory school at the age of 12 for theft and arson.

The N.S.P.C.C. knew of the family and were in contact with the wife of Richard Hindle. He was a known drinker and abused his wife. Who is quoted in the papers saying she was frightened to live with him and requesting a separation order from the Court.
