MM - 29th November 1945 (for services at Rexpoeue, France, on 29th
May 1940)
The recommendation reads:
‘At Rexpoeue France, on 29th
May 1940 the 1st battalion HLI was attacked by enemy tanks and was
subjected to shelling and mortar fire which continued throughout the day. Any
movement at once drew rifle and automatic fire.
Pte. Fraser was a runner at “B” Coy HQ.
The CSM + C.Q.M.S. of this company were missing and Pte. Fraser assumed their duties.
On his own initiative he collected a
number of stragglers and organised them as part of the company defensive
position. He remained in command of his party until required at Coy. HQ.
Later in the day some cottages, among
which the company vehicles were hidden were set on fire by enemy action. In
spite of the danger from fire Pte. Fraser collected from the vehicles the
remaining ammunition and rations and assisted in the distribution of these
throughout the company.
Throughout the action Pte. Fraser was
of the greatest assistance to his company commander. His cool and efficient
behaviour under fire was a fine example and a steadying influence on the
younger soldiers of his company.’
Private
Fraser received his Military Medal for services at Rexpoeue, France, on the 29th
May 1940, where he saved several men and a quantity of ammunition. He was taken
prisoner of war on the same day and was awarded his MM in 1945 following his
release from the POW camp.
Comes
with his original Soldier’s Service and Pay Book and the box of issue for his
Military Medal.
