A first world war casualty medal pair awarded to GS/53021 Sergeant Richard Cullen, 32nd (East Ham) Battalion Royal Fusiliers, who sadly died of wounds on the First Day of the Battle of Messines and is remembered at Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Richard Cullen was actually an alias for George Etheridge, a Canadian from Hamilton, Ontario, who was living in Lynn, Massachusetts, USA. He eloped from his wife and child, and enlisted into the British Army. He paid the ultimate price and died of wounds on the 7th June 1917 (First Day of the Battle of Messines).
