The medal is in good condition.
Acting Petty Officer Herbert Cyril Jones was Mentioned in Despatches for distinguished service during the war in Europe (London Gazette, 11th December 1945).
HM Submarine Saga was still building at the end of the war in Europe. Jones’ award was given for good service earlier in the war. He was serving on Saga when his recommendation was made.
On 11th February 1946 fishing boat Girl Lena whilst trawling in the vicinity of the Eddystone Light was struck on the port bow by HM Submarine Saga as it was returning to Devonport after an exercise. The trawler went down in a matter of minutes. After much difficulty in the darkness the submarine managed to pick up all the crew of the trawler and landed them in Plymouth the following day. The following Court Martial the young submarine Officer of the Watch was blamed for the accident.
